Begin your tour in Wilson, the Czech Capitol of Kansas. Check out the limestone architecture of the restored Opera House and Midland Hotel.

At the I-70 interchange with K-232, stop at the Smoky Hill Winery Shop to sample some local wines then drop in at the Kansas Originals Market to shop for Kansas-made products.

Continue north on the byway to Wilson Lake. Keep an eye out for bald eagles nesting along the route. If you've brought your boat along, now would be a good time to put in and fish for white bass and walleye.

If you're traveling during June, you'll be able to watch the Midwest Slope Challenge, the national remote control glider Competition.

Stop in at the Corps of Engineers Headquarters just north of the dam for information about the lake development.

Travel north to Lucas where homemade Czech bologna and smoked meats are available.

The Garden of Eden in Lucas is an excellent example of grassroots or primitive art.

The Grassroots Art Center includes more work by self-taught primitive artists including

  • Herman Divers' pull-tab motorcycle
  • M.T. Liggett's metal totems representing his political and social views of the world
  • Inez Marshall's limestone sculpture

The Art Center's courtyard presents fine examples of limestone used for architectural purposes.

Take a tour of a post rock quarry just north of Sylvan Grove to see how the fence posts are chiseled out of the earth. Contact Lucas Area Chamber of Commerce for more information: 1-785-525-6288 or by email at lucascoc@wtciweb.com.
